The first two weeks of your baby's life go by faster than anything you've ever experienced. One day you're holding a creature so new and fragile you're afraid to breathe wrong — and then suddenly they're smiling, rolling, crawling. That tiny newborn version? Gone.

Professional newborn photography isn't a luxury. It's a preservation act. And as a newborn photographer based in New Jersey, I've watched hundreds of parents come back to their gallery months or years later and say the same thing: "I'm so glad we did this."

The Window Is Tiny — And It Closes Fast

The ideal window for newborn photography is 5–14 days old. During this period, babies sleep deeply, curl into the positions they held in the womb, and have that unmistakable fresh, soft newborn look. After two weeks, they begin to unfurl. The poses that create the most iconic newborn images simply become impossible.

Most parents don't realize this until it's too late. They plan to schedule "once things settle down" — and by the time they do, the window has closed. Booking before your due date (and having a tentative session date set) is the only way to guarantee you don't miss it.

• Safety knowledge. Newborn posing requires training. Composite images, frog poses, and prop work all have safety protocols that an experienced photographer knows intuitively.

How to Prepare for Your Newborn Photo Session: A Complete Guide

You've booked your newborn session — congratulations! Now you might be wondering: what do I actually need to do to prepare? The short answer is: less than you think. A good newborn photographer handles most of it. But there are a few things you can do in the days leading up to your session to help everything go smoothly.

Timing: Schedule Around Feeding

A fed baby is a sleepy baby — and sleepy babies make for the most magical photos. Try to time your arrival so that your baby has just finished a full feeding before or during the session.

Keep the Baby Warm

My studio is kept warm — warmer than you might expect — because a warm baby is a settled baby. Please dress your baby in a loose, easy-to-remove onesie for arrival.

What to Wear (For Parents)

• Neutral tones: creams, whites, taupes, soft greys, dusty blues
• Simple cuts: avoid busy patterns, logos, or heavy textures
• Coordinated, not matching: stay in the same palette
• Comfort first: you may be sitting on the floor, bending, and holding baby in unusual positions

On the Day: What to Expect

Sessions typically run 2–4 hours. We'll work around your baby's rhythm — wrapping, posing, feeding, burping, settling throughout. Your job is to relax and trust the process.

After the Session

You'll receive your fully edited gallery within 3–4 weeks in high resolution, print-ready files. I also offer printed products — albums, wall art, heirloom boxes — for families who want something tangible to hold.
